We all appreciate having the day off work & having a summer day to relax, with fireworks, picnics, swimming, barbeques or whatever. I for one plan to be doing the same thing with my family today – woo hoo!! I just wondered how many Americans have even thought, even if it was only a passing thought, that the 4th of July is the day we celebrate the day of our nation’s independence from England. All the freedoms we have today are a direct result of the foundations that our forefathers put in place when they declared independence & wrote the Constitution. I was at the grocery store yesterday & they were playing a song on the loud speaker. It was the Marine Corps song (forgot the name). As my father & nephew were Marines, I commented to a man nearby that I liked that song. He said “I just see tomorrow as a day off work”. It made me wonder how many of us even think about why we celebrate the 4th. For me, it’s a quick thought, but it would be truly sad if we never thought about it all.
To Marvin R, I just wanted to say that I agree with you. I hope you didn’t misunderstand my question though. I have 2 nephews who are police officers & 1 of those nephews was a Marine in Desert Storm. My father was also a Marine during WWII & my brother was in the Army during the VietNam War. I have a deep appreciation for all of those people who fight to protect our freedoms and risk their lives to do so. They are the underappreciated & in many cases, the unappreciated. Yet they deserve the greatest praise for their service to their country. I only meant that were it not for our forefathers’ actions in the first place, we would not have the laws in place which help protect our freedoms that the individuals you mention so sacrificially protect for us. They all deserve recognition and respect. I was just so saddened at the comment that the man in the store made because he was so complacent. It broke my heart. I agree with your comment though. Thanks for the reminder.

I do more so now after reading the book 1776 by David McCullough. George Washington was more amazing than I ever dreamed. Without him we could not have accomplished what we did.
On the other hand I can never forget that there was a thriving population of indigenous people here who we destroyed. Book – 1491 by Charles C. Mann
For me it is bittersweet.
By the way, the person’s comment about it being a day off shows how complacent many Americans have become, and mark my words, it will come back to bite us in the ass.

I always remember why we celebrate Independence Day.
It’s to celebrate the freedoms we have from not having another country (England) running everything we do, and basically doing whatever we want, but of course with a set of rules. USA does have it’s problems, of course (I mean, which country and person doesn’t?), but it would have more problems and be totally different from what it is now.
I do always remember why we celebrate, and I never take it for granted. The thing is that I’m an immigrant from Argentina.
