I want to buy a small boat, and was wondering what a good model would be. I’m not planning on sail around the world, but i want something big enough that four people could stay on for a couple of days.

Thanks for the replys. Im not looking for a sailboat. I’m mainly wanting it just to cruise up the tennesse river maybe take it to the coast everynow and then.

You didn’t mention where you are planning on sailing, but a Catalina 25 is a good starter boat that will sleep 4 people pretty comfortably.

Try the MacGregor 26M, they are a good value, versatile, and great boat for beginners.

Some good boat advice. Answer question: Is it the activity or the object you are pursuing?I suggest pursuing the activity first. Learn to sail, crew on various boats ( racing is good ). A boat is a large hole in the water into which you pour money. Sleeping , eating , getting lucky …all best done on dry land (cheaper & more comfortable too).. I took this advice & luckily did not by the 25 ft C&C that attracted my attention. Crewed on various one design racing boats in Lake Erie ( 2 K miles worth ) over 6 years. Wound up buying a 20 ft Highlander for 6K & saved buckets of money & time. Often folks get hung up on the object & spend a lot of time cleaning , fixing & paying for a boat that is ill suited to them. Learn to sail then charter for example.Many questions need to be addressed before choosing a boat. Too numerous to mention here. I’m willing to dialogue via e-mail.

While you are looking take some time and get a boating ed class under your belt. You can get that from the USCG Aux. or the US Power Squadron, maybe your local adult ed and at Boat US.com under free training. Go to as many dealers as you can and see what available. 4 people for a couple of days would be a good size boat. I have a 30′ express and its tight with 4. You can look on and see boats in any size range. When you do purchase ask the dealer to throw in some lessons for you.

A Capri 18 is a really good size for you and another person to learn to sail.

I’d go with a Catalina 25, 27, or 28. Very roomy and they sail well. I would stay away from McGregor’s … they make them a bit thin and resale is not so hot. Used Pearsons are nice but they are a bit narrower and not as roomy. Hunter is somewhat comparable to Catalina and make some nice sailboats.
